KC Hicks Memorial Ride
September 28 - October 2, 2011

"I first met K.C. back in 1997 and had the very distinct pleasure to ride with him many times.  I cannot think of any ride that we went on that he had not already been there before at least once and in some cases several times.  He was indeed a gentleman and extremely sharp and agile given his age.  We could all be so lucky!  All who knew K.C. will miss him very much."

Mike Daniel
"I am fortunate to have come out to California for some of your rides and to have met and got to know KC."

Raymond E. Plue
"A really good guy!"

William S. Fee
"I too have ridden and roomed with KC many times and yes what a gentleman. I rode and roomed with him on his last IFMR trip and what fun. KC was the first member I ever met on my first IFMR ride at our meeting place on the edge of Bakersfield. If you ever met him you would never forget him. God speed my friend."

Howie Wass
"Dear K.C., you are the one who stopped and got to know all the New Comers, like me.You took time to glace at the maps and explain what this State or City was all about and make sure we had all the part for a ride. Remember trying to remind us to put a plastic bags over the boots in the rain?? and how your advice for keeping our hearing was to wear ear plugs??? You were always right and a best friend . We all loved you and take your good name w/us on the many trips to come."

Elisabeth Saunders
"K.C. was one of the first members of the International Fellowship of Motorcycling Rotarians, and could be counted on to be on all the rides. To have known K.C. was to have loved him. I roomed with K.C. on many IFMR rides. Such a gentleman. Such a friend. He will be deeply missed."

Ron Lyster

KC HIcks was a unique individual, and will be remembered by all of us who rode with him as a gentleman, probably the oldest and most traveled rider we know of, and the guy who took his time to enjoy every trip fully by going at a slower pace and catching up when the group stopped.  It's amazing that he just wrote us recently that he was giving up his riding, I thought he would ride to wherever he is now, and be the last one to get there! :-)  I'm honored to have had him in my life, and will never forget him.

"Big Bob" Hirsch

"KC was as fine a man as I have ever met and what a pleasure to ride with him.

Anthony D'Arcy

"I will always remember KC.  He was one of the kindest people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing, always a sweet and gentle spirit.  I know he’s in a good place now."  Dave Long "I remember he rode an old BMW at his own pace, and managed to catch up to the group about 15 minutes after we had arrived. A good man!"

Larie Trippet
"I remember KC from my few adventures with the IFMR gang.  I remember his smile when he rode up on his Burgman for lunch at Death Valley, only a few minutes behind all of the “ton-up” riders on their fast mounts."

Jim Buntin
"It just seemed KC never aged, always rode his BMW at the same speed, was a wonderful friend and was as much a gentleman as any one could ever hope to be.  Many great rides and fun times with KC and I’m sorry I haven’t seen him since our overnight at Jeans house in Anza. KC will be missed."

Don Theile
"He was always so much fun, so positive and ... such a gentleman, such a friend.  He will be deeply missed."

Jean Dores

"One of the best riders I had the honor to ride with.  I will always remember the look on his face when after a hard day's ride, we checked in at dark at the haunted hotel in Jerome, Arizona.   K.C. somehow dropped his keys into the well of the  "oldest elevator west of the Mississippi".   He was not anxious to go down into there to get them back.   But he did.   I also liked his brother and enjoyed riding with the two of them.  Now he is one our Riders in the Sky.   God bless K.C. Hicks."

Rod Hatter

"K.C. was a real gentleman who always had a nice thing to say to every one and was always interested in you as a person and what you had to say."

Dave Gallegos

"KC was a very special person and one heck of a motorcyclist. His riding stories were always fun to listen to. He logged a lot of miles on that BMW and I will always remember him and his wonderful sense of humor. Leon and I would not have ridden the "million dollar highway" out of Durango if it wasn't for KC's encouragement. You said it, a gentleman, a friend and much, much more."

Pat Lewis

"I only rode with KC twice but have very fond memories of him as a gentleman and one who LOVED to ride."

Rik Goodell

"Norma and I had the privilege to ride with KC some time ago but we have often talked to each other of the wonderful memories that K C gave to us. We extend our sincere condolences to his Family and loved ones.  We can only echo all the comments about the type of person K C was and will remember him in our prays tonight.  We know that any time we go riding KC will always be alive in our memories."

Nick Sherwood

"KC simply loved to ride - He never went fast. He just rode along at his pace letting the rest race off ahead. Still he'd pull up a few minutes later - "Hi guys" - "Hi KC."  KC rode safe and enjoyed the scenery. Never crashed, never got a ticket. He said he couldn't understand riders staring at the tail lights of a car in front of them. He also said his "church" was riding out in the country admiring God's nature. He'd nod at a tree or a mountain and say, "Thank You God."  It was KC who taught me to slow down and smell the flowers. It was hard for this old racer and I'd get frustrated. One time returning from a ride to Idaho, I asked KC if he'd mind that I went on ahead and I'd see him later in Reno. I raced off at speed. and miles down the 395, I was pulled over for speeding. I stood by the side of the road, head hanging down, saying to my self, Please God, don't let KC come by now."

"Of course he'd stop to pee every 50 miles. Ok if we all do that? Ha ha. Mostly KC loved the fellowship. He loved you guys and looked forward to every ride with you. At the end of the evening after the dinner and conversation, he's retire to bed and read his BMW magazine. I'd be watching TV on into the night. I'd look over at KC - sound asleep. The man had a genuinely clear conscience.  He was as close to a saint as could be without the Pope canonizing him."

"I dearly loved my brother."

Pat Hicks

"I'm Pastor Steve Beckham, K.C.'s son-in-law (married to Meri, K.C.'s  oldest daughter). I ride a 1997 Honda ST1100.   K.C. and I enjoyed  many (though not enough) miles together, most especially on his last trip to Sedona when he handed over his beloved R80S to his brother Pat's wife, Paula.  I most certainly want to participate in this ride if I can make it work with my schedule.  Thanks so much for doing this. I know K.C. will be riding with us and smiling all the way."
